Woven mesh versus punched sheet

Two things get called micro-mesh and they are not the same. A woven mesh is cloth: fine wires crossing over and under, usually stainless, with openings defined by the weave. A perforated sheet is solid metal with holes punched through it, and however small those holes are, the sheet is a flat plane with a certain percentage of it removed. The difference shows up in how water behaves. A woven surface presents wires at slightly different heights, which breaks up a sheet of water and helps it find a way through. A flat punched sheet lets water skate across it, and the finer the perforation the more it behaves like a solid surface in a hard rain. Punched aluminium is cheaper, easier to form, and perfectly reasonable at coarser hole sizes. Where it struggles is at the fine end, exactly where it is marketed as equivalent to a woven product. If a quote says micro-mesh, it is fair to ask which of the two it means.
