How surface tension holds water to a curve

Reverse-curve guards work on a principle you can see in a kitchen sink. Water running down a surface tends to cling to it and follow it around a bend rather than flying off in a straight line. A reverse-curve guard uses that: the top surface carries water over a rounded nose, around the curve, and into a narrow slot at the back, while leaves keep going straight and drop off the edge. It is genuinely clever and it works, within limits. The limits are worth knowing. Surface tension is a weak force, so a heavy enough flow overruns the curve and shoots past the slot. Anything that reduces how well water clings to the surface, like an accumulated film of dirt or pollen, reduces the effect. And the slot is narrow by design, which means the fine material that does make the turn has a small opening to get through. Understanding the mechanism tells you where a guard type is a good fit and where it is not.
