Micro-mesh guards are rated by the size of their openings, usually described in microns. The number matters because it sets what gets through. An opening around 250 microns will pass rain fast enough to keep up with a hard downpour while stopping most of what falls on a roof. Go much finer and the mesh starts rejecting water along with the dirt, because surface tension lets a film bridge a very small hole instead of falling through it. Go much coarser and you have a screen, not a filter, and the fine material that causes real clogs walks straight in. The practical target is an opening small enough to stop shingle grit and seed casings but large enough that water still breaks through under its own weight.
